Background of the Study

Nursing education has evolved significantly with the integration of technology into training methodologies. One of the most impactful innovations in recent years is virtual clinical simulations (VCS), which provide nursing students with realistic, interactive experiences that mimic real-life clinical settings (Smith et al., 2023). These simulations allow students to develop clinical reasoning, decision-making, and practical skills in a safe environment without putting patients at risk (Lee et al., 2024). As nursing curricula worldwide seek to enhance learning outcomes and address challenges in clinical placements, VCS has emerged as a viable alternative or supplement to traditional clinical training.

At Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, nursing students must complete rigorous practical training to develop competencies required for professional practice. However, due to limitations in available clinical placements, patient safety concerns, and increasing student enrollment, ensuring adequate hands-on training for every student is challenging (Adebola & Ogunyemi, 2023). Virtual clinical simulations provide an opportunity to bridge this gap by offering controlled and repeatable training scenarios, allowing students to gain experience and confidence before engaging in real-world patient care.

Despite the growing adoption of VCS in nursing education globally, there is a need to evaluate its effectiveness in the Nigerian context, specifically in Ondo State University of Medical Sciences. Questions remain regarding its impact on students' practical skill acquisition, confidence levels, and overall clinical competence. This study aims to assess the role of virtual clinical simulations in nursing training, exploring their effectiveness and identifying potential challenges to their integration in Nigerian nursing education.

Statement of the Problem

Traditional clinical training in nursing is increasingly facing challenges such as limited patient availability, faculty shortages, and ethical concerns regarding patient safety. These challenges have led nursing educators to seek alternative teaching strategies, including virtual clinical simulations, to enhance training efficiency and ensure competency development (Parker & Kim, 2023). While research suggests that VCS can improve students’ clinical judgment and critical thinking, its effectiveness in Nigerian nursing education remains underexplored.

At Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, there is limited empirical evidence on how virtual clinical simulations impact students' learning outcomes compared to traditional clinical training. Additionally, factors such as accessibility, technological infrastructure, and faculty preparedness for using VCS remain potential barriers to successful implementation. Without a clear understanding of the effectiveness and limitations of VCS in nursing education, its integration into training programs may not yield the desired improvements in nursing competency.

This study seeks to evaluate the role of virtual clinical simulations in nursing training at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, examining their effectiveness in improving students' clinical competence, identifying challenges in their use, and providing recommendations for enhancing their integration into nursing curricula.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of virtual clinical simulations in enhancing nursing students' practical skills at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences.
  2. To assess nursing students' perceptions of the benefits and challenges of using virtual clinical simulations in their training.
  3. To identify factors that influence the successful implementation of virtual clinical simulations in nursing education.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are virtual clinical simulations in improving nursing students’ practical skills at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences?
  2. What are nursing students' perceptions of the advantages and limitations of virtual clinical simulations in their training?
  3. What factors contribute to the successful integration of virtual clinical simulations in nursing education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Virtual clinical simulations significantly enhance nursing students' practical skills compared to traditional clinical training.
  2. Nursing students perceive virtual clinical simulations as an effective and beneficial tool for skill development.
  3. The successful implementation of virtual clinical simulations in nursing education is influenced by technological infrastructure, faculty training, and student engagement.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, assessing the role of virtual clinical simulations in their training. The research will evaluate students' skill acquisition, perceptions of VCS, and challenges associated with its implementation. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data, potential technological constraints affecting VCS effectiveness, and the need for comparative studies with traditional clinical training.

Definitions of Terms
